Battle of the Bands 2019

Oh, What a Night!…

We had an awesome evening of music at Battle of the Bands 2019. All the bands rocked the stage and both the judges and the audience feedback was that the standard was very high this year. Find out the RESULTS here. (Photos and videos to come.)

This year’s top prize was a promotional package including airplay on More FM, a recording session by the Music Place, professional band photos by Flash Gordon, a professional video by Creative Cavalry, and an interview on the Far North News Facebook page. Runners-up and the People’s Choice winners were awarded cash prizes, vouchers from the RockShop Whangarei, and goodies from supporting businesses.

Stranger Paradise (2nd Place in the SmokeFree RockQuest Northland Regional Finals) entertained us with some funk-rock originals during the judges’ deliberation. Visit their YouTube Channel to see more of them.

With a big thank you to:

– Our generous sponsors:

The Turner Centre, More FM, Creative Cavalry, LJ Hooker Kerikeri, Jan & Yvette at LJ Hooker, Whangarei Rockshop, The Music Place, Flash Gordon Photography, Take Five

We run a FREE Mentoring through Music programme every Tuesday called Be Free Youth, open to 12 – 18 year-olds, and many of the local bands who entered the competition have been through the programme. Northern Advocate

Grateful thanks to Peter de Graaf of the Northern Advocate for covering the event. More here

Looking forward to next year’s competition… We are hoping to add more prizes next year, such as Best Original Song, Best Cover Song and Best Entertainers, as we felt so many bands deserved more recognition on the night.

If you are a local business who would like to sponsor one of our new prizes, or can help us increase the advertising budget for the event, please get in touch.

If you are a band who is thinking of entering, here are the areas to work on… The judges will be looking for musical tightness, originality and entertainment value. Cover songs are welcome, but it helps if you have added your own twist to make it your own. Keep an eye out for when the competition opens, and we look forward to seeing you next year!
