BATTLE OF THE BANDS is a competition for under-18 year olds who live in the Far North/Whangarei area. Places are limited, so get your entry in quick.
7 PM | Friday September 20th | 2019
The Turner Centre | KERIKERI | Far North | New Zealand
WHO CAN ENTER
All entrants must be from the area between, and including, Whangarei and the top of the Far North and under 18 years-old at the time of the competition. It is not necessary to be enrolled at a school or college.
WHAT IS A BAND
In this competition, a band must consist of at least 3 musicians, with a minimum of 2 playing instruments.
HOW MANY SONGS CAN WE PERFORM, and WHAT TYPE?
You can choose to perform one or two songs on the night for a maximum of 8 minutes performance time.
The songs can be original compositions, cover songs, or a mix of the two. Judges will be looking for originality, so if you are performing covers, try and add your own twist!
All genres welcome, but please NO backing tracks or samples. Make your own music.
WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A MENTOR/TUTOR OVER 18 YEARS OLD PERFORMING WITH US
Yes, you certainly can perform on the night with an over-18 mentor – we believe that an on-stage performance in front of an audience is a great experience all young bands should enjoy, even if they need a little help.
BUT please be aware that, in this situation, your band would not be eligible for a prize.
HOW WILL IT BE JUDGED
The competition will be judged by a panel of music industry professionals.
There will also be a People’s Choice award voted for by the audience with a secret ballot. One vote per person, so be sure to bring your supporters!
Cash prizes will be awarded to the Top Three bands selected by the panel, and to the recipient of the People’s Choice Award selected by the Audience.
HOW TO ENTER
Please fill in the online form to enter. There is a Band Competition Entry fee of $10 per band, payable on the night. 100% of all entry fees will be added to the cash prize awards.
All band members must have permission from a parent or guardian.
There will be a detailed set of rules provided to each band entry.
One rule that must be strictly followed : There must be no smoking, no drugs and no underage alcohol consumed as this contravenes the founding principles of Be Free Youth. Any entrant found to be breaking this rule will result in their band being disqualified and being asked to leave the premises with immediate effect.
By entering the competition, bands and their members give us (Be Free Youth) permission to take photographs and/or record footage of their performance for promotional use.
As there will be children present at the concert, we ask that bands respect their audience and refrain from using offensive or explicit lyrics.
Please note that, in the event of places being oversubscribed, bands will be awarded a place on a first-come first-served basis. Any bands who do not make the final list will be put on a waiting list and contacted in case of any cancellation (again on a first-come first-served basis). Thank you for your understanding.
